My favorite music takes you on a journey, and I appreciate it more when the artist does so without words.
I recently released what I consider to be my “ma-gnome” opus, a six movement, neoclassical, psychedelic symphony that was composed, produced, and then performed live in a single take using only the Korg Gadget app on a single Nintendo Switch.
It is entitled, “The Gnometendo Witch".
My symphony tells a story, and if you're interested in it, you can find the program notes for each of the movements below.
Each movement of the symphony unveils a new chapter in the story. We begin by using mathematical vibrations to open a portal to the Otherworld, the realm of the Fae. We then traverse to another dimension and find ourselves in an enchanted forest where we stumble upon a gnome dance party. It will be a wild journey, but I hope you enjoy it until we have to say goodbye to our new Fae Friends and return home.

Movement I ~ Synthcraft
- Key: E minor
- Tempo: 60bpm
- The first movement sets the tone for the journey, featuring a four-part round played by lead synths. The intricate harmonies and mathematical patterns created by the overlapping melodies summon a Portal to the Otherworld.
Movement II ~ Portal
- Key: E minor
- Tempo: 88bpm
- As swirling energy appears, the earth rumbles, and a zipper in the fabric of space-time opens. The audience is compelled into the portal, which promptly disappears out of existence, setting the stage for the mystical journey ahead.
Movement III ~ Journey
- Key: A minor
- Tempo: 88bpm
- The third movement, also a four-part round, takes us on a turbulent journey to the realm of the Fae. The harmonies at this faster tempo evoke the feeling of traversing through different dimensions. You may hear the time bugs and time faeries zooming by!
Movement IV ~ Enchanted Forest
- Key: E minor
- Tempo: 120bpm
- The mystical sounds of the forest realm envelop the listener as we navigate through the enchanting melodies. The atmosphere is filled with wonder and mystery, guiding the audience deeper into the magical world. The forest is enchanted, NOT haunted. If it gets a little spooky, don’t worry! We’ll find the path again!
Movement V ~ Gnomestep

- Tempo: 115bpm
- Within the Enchanted Forest, a lively gnome dance party unfolds to the upbeat rhythms of Gnomestep. Polyrhythms and dynamic melodies keep the audience engaged as we celebrate with the mischievous creatures in this whimsical setting.
Movement VI ~ Farewell
- Key: G major
- Tempo: 110bpm
- As our journey nears its end, we are surrounded by a symphony of gratitude and appreciation as we say farewell to our new Fae friends. The consonance and dissonance waltz to and fro, delivering a profound farewell to the mystical beings who guided us on this enchanting adventure.

Gwendolyn Phaedra Karabensh has tapped into her classical music background with what she considers her ma-gnome opus, a six movement, neoclassical, psychedelic symphony that was composed, produced, and then performed live in a single take using only the Korg Gadget app on a single Nintendo Switch. It is entitled, “The Gnometendo Witch".
Functioning as composer, Gwen wrote parts for a myriad of synths and intricate drum machines. She then became conductor and soloist as she recorded this work live for an audience using the motion controls, touchscreen, and the good old fashioned buttons on the Nintendo Switch. The Korg Gadget app gives her the ability to weave together an orchestra of 16 electronic instruments using physical movements and the mere touch of the Nintendo Switch. She stretches the limitations put in place by the Switch, creating an entire vibrational journey with this unconventional instrument.
Gwen invites you to immerse yourself in a sonic adventure that transcends traditional boundaries. Each movement of her symphony unveils a new chapter, leading us through portals, enchanted forests, and lively gnome dance parties in the realm of the Fae.
